AI4HE Recording – ChatGPT as Knowledge Co-Constructor

Hi everyone. Another one of the recordings from the AI4HE conference has been made available on YouTube. You can watch it below or by clicking this link. In this presentation, Dr Lynette Pretorius and Chris Pretorius explore the implications of integrating generative AI, specifically ChatGPT, into qualitative data analysis. Their findings showcase that ChatGPT can enhance researcher reflexivity and serve as a catalyst for intellectual discovery, yet its effectiveness is contingent on human oversight and well-crafted prompt design. One of the most innovative aspects of their study is its participatory approach, in which both the researcher and the participant engaged with ChatGPT’s analyses. This approach empowered participants, decentralised researcher authority, and promoted inclusive knowledge construction, enhancing the ethical integrity of the study and enriching the authenticity of the findings.

The full paper is available by clicking this link. An open-access pre-print is also available for those without institutional access. Let us know below what you think – what are the potential benefits and risks of using generative AIs such as ChatGPT as a knowledge co-constructor in research?

Note: The recordings for all the AI4HE conference were sent out to all registrants via email during the holiday break. If you did not receive the recordings, please let us know.
